Human Learning: A Developmental Approach

There are two different perspectives on cognitive development that provide us with useful information about how children's mental abilities develop. Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development and Lev Vygotsky's sociocultural theory of cognitive development help us to have appropriate expectations about; how children think, what they can think about logically; and how you can provide direct support to each child's growing ability to think. Includes biographies and information about Piaget's and Vygotsky's learning theories.

Both Piaget's and Vygotsky's theories are developmental ones.

Pick a learning experience (you can use one given in this article, if you like).

Apply each theory to it uniquely.

Show how the characteristics of developmental theories (given in minilecture 4.1) apply to your example.

In other words, I'm asking you to integrate theory and a concrete experience (just like the theorists do).

Note: If you haven't yet read Darwin's baby biography (link below) notes in the written essay portion of this module, take a look. It may give you some ideas about how to express yourself.
