Kafka is on a strange and unpredictable journey. This week I'm going to ask you to think about a key idea in
postmodernism: that our identities are more complex and less coherent than we assume. Between chapters 7
and 15 find an example of a moment when a character experiences "incoherence" or "incompletion" or other
challenges to assumptions they have about themselves, even reality! Choose a scene in which Kafka or
Nakata struggle to understand the pieces of a puzzle they are confronting. Consider your example in detail--
why is it there; what makes it interesting? Do we all feel "incomplete" sometimes? How do we find meaning?
