Image Analysis

Challenge you can imagine that you work at a product design firm. Your boss has said that you can choose from 1 of 7 new client projects (below) and come up with an innovative physical prototype for that client that can be used for a presentation in a week. This prototype should be as functional as possible, but it can be of a different scale and made of different materials than the final product.

You can create your physical prototype from any materials you have at home, around your dorm room or campus, or from friends and family. If you have safe access to a 3D printer, or workshop of any kind, you are welcome to use those resources too!!

These are your options:

1) Create an innovative phone case.

2) Create a innovative magic trick or illusion.

3) Create an innovative wallet.

4) Create an innovative shopping cart.

5) Create an innovative way to get a kite or drone that is caught in a tree.

6) Create an innovative way to clear a path or driveway of snow.

7) Create an innovative miniature golf obstacle.

ASSIGNMENT OUTLINE: 100 total points

Brainstorm Process: 25 points

Record your brainstorming process in a Word document, include pictures of your brainstorming process. Describe the process you used to come up with various ideas. You should have at least 5 ideas to share related to the project you have chosen.

Prototype Demonstration: 75 points

Demonstrate how your prototype works. You can upload a video of the prototype in action or demonstrate how your prototype functions through a design document with pictures of the prototype and text describing the features and how it operates.

IMPORTANT! In your video or document you need to:

Describe the innovation and the materials you used in your construction.
Show off your physical prototype and how it operates and why it's innovative.
Tell us or highlight what the most challenging aspects of creating your physical prototype were.
Tell us or highlight what constraints affected your build the most?
Tell us or highlight what difficulties or failures you faced making your physical prototype. Make sure to let us know how you resolved or attempted to resolve those challenges.
IF WE CAN FIND YOUR IDEA VIA A GOOGLE SEARCH YOU WILL NOT GET CREDIT!!

Here is a real life example to inspire you:

SRAM LLC is a privately owned bicycle component manufacturer founded on a dream to create a more fun, efficient, and faster experience on a bicycle. The company is known for producing cycling components, including some internally developed, such as Grip Shift, EAGLE (1x12), DoubleTap, dedicated 1x11 mountain and road drivetrains and SRAM Red eTap. The company also grew organically and through acquisitions to become a high-end cycling component brand, selling under the brands SRAM, Avid, RockShox, Truvativ, Quarq, Zipp, and TIME Sport pedals. They really are "all things bike."

While SRAM is an international company, they have a design lab located right here in Colorado Springs.

The Colorado Springs design lab teams were challenged to construct mini-golf obstacle prototypes out of a limited set of supplies (like boxes, bike parts, tape, foam etc.) to help reinforce brainstorming, creativity, teamwork and their famously collaborative culture.
