Immigration and Citizenship

  1. In your first paragraph, broadly introduce the topic of immigration to your reader. To do this, draw on the Portes & Rumbaut reading and our class discussions. Try and tell the reader why this topic is important, without relying too heavily on personal anecdotes.
  2. In your second paragraph summarize the readings from the track you chose.
  3. Find a newspaper article about immigration or an immigrant community. In your third paragraph describe the events covered in the article and how they connect to the readings.
  4. Choose either Marx’s theory of social class or Mills’ theory of the power elite. Describe that theoretical framework (imagine the reader has never heard of it before and break it down). Answer this question: how can that theoretical framework be applied to the issue/story you have been describing in this paper?
  5. Restate the main points you have made in this paper. Try and describe the way the theory, the story, and the larger social issue of immigration tie together.
