In Favor of the Death Penalty

1 A) The death penalty is a proper retribution for taking a life or certain other crimes and has been used
throughout history.
1 B) A heinous crime is an act of free will, and life is sacred. If a person still is willing to kill under the threat of
the death penalty, he/she should be willing to suffer the consequences of taking a life, which is sacred.
2 A) Many murderers are repeat offenders who clearly cannot be rehabilitated through prison time.
2 B) It is unfair for taxpayers to support an overcrowded prison system.
3 A) The rare use of the death penalty is good and shows the care with which the death penalty is chosen as a
punishment.
3 B) A very few innocent persons wrongly executed is worth the price for the greater society safety and
protection. DNA testing and other methods of modern crime scene science can now effectively eliminate
almost all uncertainty as to a person's guilt or innocence, so very few innocent people would be executed.

  1. The death penalty gives closure to victim’  s family who have suffered so much.

5 A) It gives prosecutors another bargaining chip in the plea bargain process, which is essential in cutting costs
    in an overcrowded court system.
5 B) The threat of the death penalty reduces homicide rate.
    Opposed to the Death Penalty:
1 A) It is barbaric and morally wrong. We as a society have to move away from the "eye for an eye" revenge
mentality if civilization is to advance
1 B) The death penalty is historically linked to totalitarian or non-democratic governments. America would look
better in the eyes of the world without the death penalty.
2 A) The financial cost to the taxpayers of an execution is actually higher than extended imprisonment.
2 B) Life in prison is a worse punishment and a more effective deterrent.
3 A) The possibility exists that innocent men and women may be put to death.
3 B) The death penalty is used disproportionately against minorities and the poor.
4 A) It is useless in that it doesn't bring the victim back to life.
4 B) The prisoner's family must suffer from seeing their loved one put to death by the state, as well as going
    through the emotionally-draining appeals process.
5 A) Threat of the death penalty does not discourage or reduce crime
