"In Living Culture: Race and American Culture"

Read the article by Michael Omi "In Living Culture: Race and American Culture" on pages 129-140 of our e-book (I have attached the article). In it, Omi argues that popular culture, and, in particular, Hollywood, relies on implicit, barely visible stereotypes of race and gender.

Write a two-page response to the prompt below. Note that I have uploaded (also below) a sample outline you can use to help organize the response.

In his article, Omi claims that some forms of racism are overt, while others are implicit, or inferential. What does he mean by this claim? What examples does he give of implicit racism in Hollywood movies? Do you think that his examples provide effective support for his argument? Why, or why not?

Remember to introduce your imaginary reader to the article and big idea in the opening paragraph.
Then, follow-up with two-three body paragraphs that summarize some of his ideas and examples.
Create a concluding paragraph that evaluates the examples Omi uses. Are his examples appropriate and effective?
As you develop, support your response with carefully chosen quotes from the text.
Use the sample outline to help organize your response.
