In Love and Hate m Jamestown

In Love and Hate m Jamestown: John Smith, Pocahontas, and the Heart of a New Nation, David A. Price presented a more complicated and complex version of the legendary story of the founding of Virginia. His narrative focused on class and the development of capitalism and brought together several important characters, most notably Chief Powhatan, Pocahontas, and John Smith. In doing so, some say he challenged the traditional View of the events in the early Jamestown colony. Based on your reading of the book: What role did John Smith play in the development of the colony? What role did Pocahontas play? What was their relationship like? What was the relationship between colonists and Indians like? What role did capitalism play in this story? How was this version of history different than the traditional one, if at all? Was Price’s argument persuasive? Why or why not?
