Assignment: The class will be divided into 6 groups of 4 or 3 students and assigned a set of representative infectious diseases from each of chapters 19 - 24 . This group ass i gnment will be worth a total 50 points per person. Each group will choose a topic of interest and research the assigned topic from reliable and accurate sources . Each group will provide a final written report . The due date for the written report is week before presentation . Written Report (S tudy Guides) : Written report w ill be worth 25 points, should be no more than 2 - 3 pages long, typed double - spaced, provide at least 5 references from which the information contained in the paper was derived and should include the following information: a. Caus e of the disease: b rief discussion of the physiology of the organism, w hether it is bacterial, viral, protozoan etc. and characteristics of the organism, including adhesion, toxin production, and virulence factors. b. Signs and Symptoms of the disease: brief discussion on how this disease is diagnosed by medical professional and how it can be recognized by the patient. c. Transmission of the disease: brief discussion of the mechanism by which this disease is transmitted to humans d. Treatment of the disease: brief d iscussion of antibiotics, antivirals, and other therapies used to treat the disease. e. Prevention of the disease: brief discussion on preventative measures such as vaccines, physical barriers, water treatment, patient management, etc. f. Recent outbreaks: Resea rch and describe the most recent outbreaks or incidents of the disease. Describe what measures have been taken recently to control and/or treat the disease. g. The history of the disease: Who first discovered the organism? How did they relate the organism to the disease to the disease it caused? Where id the disease originate? How long has it affected mankind? Compare historical impact of the disease to the current day. h. Overall global impact of the disease: brief discussion on how this disease affects individu als worldwide. This section co u ld include charts, graphs, and statistical data on your disease. Group Participation: Participation in this proj ect is worth 5 points for each group member. Each group member is expected to participate equally in this proje ct by pro duci ng at least one study guide or handouts. The entire group is expected to participate in leading the discussion on the day that the topics assigned to the group are discussed. Each group will be charge of four infectious diseases each class per iod. Groups a re expected to discuss each of the topics above in detail , and should spend at least 15 minutes discussing each topic. If your group does not fill up their allotted time, they will be placed on the “seat of heat” and be grilled by the profe ssor until they have adequately discussed their topic. Each member of the group will be evaluated by the ot her group members and assigned points based on their participation in the project. Group participation evaluations will be completed using Peer Evalu ation Score and Profes sor’s A ssessment Score . It is important that the student meets with the instructor at least one week before the scheduled presentation for final instructions.
