Explain; disseminate information to reader; provide clear instructions; direct; identify; demonstrate knowledge of reliability, validity of methodologies; demonstrate knowledge of statistical approaches.
Typical areas to include:
1 Research design- what is the overall study going to look like?
• This is the detailed version of what was included in your Intro
• What are your groups? How many visits (Screening, baseline, post testing, etc.)?
• Outline what will happen each visit.
2) Subject selection
• Where to “recruit” your subjects?
• How many people do you need?
• Minimum 30/group!
• Identify population of interest in detail
• Outline inclusion criteria (age, sex, activity level, health, etc.)
• Outline exclusion criteria (similar as above but what things would make them ineligible)
• Must mention informed consent!
3) Is there an exercise or dietary intervention?
• Frequency, Intensity, Type, Time (FITT)- how will you standardize this program for each participant?
• Diet- How will you confirm how much one needs to eat vs. another person?
• Is weight loss a DV? How to you standardize this?
• Other interventions should also be standardized as well!
4) How will data be collected?
• Look at each of you DVs and think of how you would obtain this information
• Exercise tests
• Biological samples/Lab tests
• Questionnaires (must be standard questionnaires!)
• How to choose?
• Does one already exist, or can one be modified?
• Literature search- see how others have measured something in the past
Elk 5) Statistical analysis- based on study design (will need one per Specific Aim)
• How many groups do you have?
• How many timepoints are these people being tested?
and controls
