International strategic management
The assignment is a 3,000-word research project.
Select one international organisation (normally a publicly quoted company) from the following industries: Tourism, Marketing, Retail or Energy.
The research project will be a critical analysis of the strategic management of the chosen organisation over the past 3 years.
Underpinning research will be supported in the PC-based sessions.
Exclusions: Students may not select an organisation which has been covered in any other major piece of work or the dissertation. If in doubt, consult the lecturer. - do not use Dyson or PUMA.
Guidance:
Selection of the chosen organisation will follow a period of investigation to ensure there is sufficient source materials to support the necessary desktop research.
In analysing and evaluating the case study, student may address the following questions:
• To what extent did the company experience “strategic success” in this period? (think in terms of financial outcomes and longer-term positioning in the markets around the world).
• Were the assumptions underwriting the company’s strategic intentions and positioning well founded? Was the underlying logic sound or misconceived in relation to the external markets or choice of partner?
• What role did management play in the outcomes? Could the decisions easily have resulted in failure?
• To what extent were the outcomes due to luck?
• What are the key lessons that can be learned from the experience of your chosen company in this case? What would you advise another company to emulate and what to avoid?
Ensure that your answer is supported by appropriate exposition and analysis of the environmental conditions facing the company over the past 3 years.
