Religious studies can be a challengin" rel="nofollow">ing field for many students. This is due, in" rel="nofollow">in part, to the way in" rel="nofollow">in which religion and opin" rel="nofollow">inions about it can be very personal for many people (in" rel="nofollow">in a way that, say, history or economics may not be). Additionally, it is not a subject that most of us are used to approachin" rel="nofollow">ing academically in" rel="nofollow">in the same way that we learn to approach other subjects durin" rel="nofollow">ing elementary school or high school. After this week's assigned readin" rel="nofollow">ings and other material, did any of your preconceived notions of studyin" rel="nofollow">ing religion change? Did anythin" rel="nofollow">ing surprise you or puzzle you?

One thin" rel="nofollow">ing (among many) that is frequently debated by scholars of American religion is how much we should study those at the margin" rel="nofollow">ins of a religion vs. those who consider themselves to be in" rel="nofollow">in its orthodox center. For example, in" rel="nofollow">in thin" rel="nofollow">inkin" rel="nofollow">ing about this week, do we learn more about Puritanism by studyin" rel="nofollow">ing someone like John Win" rel="nofollow">inthrop or someone like Anne Hutchin" rel="nofollow">inson? What do you thin" rel="nofollow">ink about studyin" rel="nofollow">ing the outsiders of a tradition vs. its "in" rel="nofollow">insiders"?

Many of the most devoted spiritualists (those who saw spiritualism as somethin" rel="nofollow">ing that completely in" rel="nofollow">informed their view of the world rather than those who saw it primarily as a form of entertain" rel="nofollow">inment or a way to try to contact your dead aunt) were in" rel="nofollow">involved in" rel="nofollow">in causes like the campaign for women's right to vote, dress reform (arguin" rel="nofollow">ing that some forms of women's clothin" rel="nofollow">ing like corsets were harmful and should be replaced), abolition of slavery, etc. Why do you thin" rel="nofollow">ink many people who were deeply in" rel="nofollow">involved in" rel="nofollow">in spiritualism were also attracted to these social causes?

It's the year of your choice in" rel="nofollow">in the 1960s, and you're a reporter. You have the opportunity to in" rel="nofollow">interview one of the figures we've discussed or read about in" rel="nofollow">in this week's unit, but you can only ask them three questions. Who do you in" rel="nofollow">interview, and what do you ask?
