Remember the four factors of the Kaya Identity that contribute to anthropogenic emissions. Select one factor of
the Kaya Identity and produce a policy brief to your city's mayor (or equivalent) outlining a policy that would
reduce your selected factor's contribution to anthropogenic emissions, assuming that the other factors of the
Kaya Identity are constant. The mayor that you choose may be in the country you are currently residing in or in
the country that you are a citizen of. Note that you are writing to your local government so be mindful of what
policies are within their scope. Also, government officials are extremely busy individuals so your brief should be
clear, succinct, and specific.
While a local scope is preferred, feel free to go provincial/territorial (or equivalent) or national if you cannot find
the appropriate information that you need. Again, just be mindful of their scope. For example, in Canada,
different services are provided by the municipal, provincial, and federal governments (Links to an external

You can find out about writing policy briefs from The Writing Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
(Links to an external site.) and from Canada's IDRC (Links to an external site.).
Here is an example policy brief: "Supportive Housing for Ontario" from Wellesley Institute (Links to an external
site.).
The goals of your policy briefs are (1) to summarize the reasons that action is necessary (scientific
background, expected/current impacts, ethical and economic considerations) and (2) to propose a specific
policy action (identify the action, state why this action, and explain how to implement).
Requirements:
The polcy brief should be 1,000 - 1,500 words, excluding references.
The brief should be single spaced, Arial, 12pt font, 1" margins.
Only include figures if necessary, but you will not receive extra marks for them.
