Laboratory test

INTRODUCTION
This report presents the results of a sieve analysis that was performed on a prepared sample of granular soil.
The laboratory test was performed on 14 September 2015 in the New York City College of Technology
Department of Construction Management and Civil Engineering Technology soils laboratory, Room 409A. The
purpose of the test was to determine the particle distribution, prepare a graph of the test results, calculate the
Effective Size (D10), the Uniformity Coefficient (Cu) and Coefficient of Curvature (Cc), and to classify the soil
sample using the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (ASHTO), the Unified
Soil Classification System (USCS) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) soil Classification
systems.
EQUIPMENT
The laboratory test was performed using the following equipment

  • ???
  • ???
  • ???
Note: The test soil was taken from pre-dried laboratory samples; therefore, oven-drying of the material was not
    required.
    PROCEDURE
    Discussion of the testing procedure
    SUMMARY OF RESULTS
Summarize the results of the test
    DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION
Discuss the properties and classify the soil in the three classification systems.
    Is your sample well-graded, etc?
    Discuss sources of error
Would this material be good for use as construction backfill? Why?
