SOWK 611: Leadership and Management in the Social Work Profession and Organizations
Assignment 2 - Leadership Analysis and Impact to Vulnerable Populations
One of the student learning outcomes for this course involves the critical analysis of leadership
styles/approaches and how these attributes may have a direct or indirect impact to vulnerable populations.
To assess your ability to do this, you will be asked to write a paper focusing on your selected leader’s
leadership style, ethical frame, sources of power, communication, managing conflict, and the interaction
between the leader and a specific vulnerable population. You must get approval of the selected leader and
vulnerable population from your instructor prior to begin working on this assignment. The paper should
be structured according to the three substantive areas listed below, and should not simply answer the
questions, but rather provide a clear and thoughtful description of the major leadership components. This
assignment is 6-7 pages and is worth 30% of your course grade.
I. Leadership style and ethical frame (2 ½ – 3 pages)
A. The leader: Introduce the leader’s professional background, major accomplishments, and the client
population he/she has mostly served/impacted.
B. Key leadership theories: Identify the leadership theories/approaches they likely practice. How
would you assess their Servant Leadership, Transformational Leadership, Authentic Leadership,
Social Entrepreneurship, and/or Building Public Goods?
C. Strengths based leadership (SBL): Identify the leader’s five strongest attributes and explain why you
think these strengths are part of the leader’s leadership style (use examples when possible).
D. Describe and analyze the leader’s ethical frame. How has the leader’s ethics influenced the
followers?
II. Sources of power analysis (1 ½ pages)
A. Describe and analyze the leader’s sources of power and decision making.
B. Share at least one situation when the leader had to exercise authority. Were there any
negative/positive consequences?
C. Identify the one strength and one limitation from the sources of power this leader has used.
III. Interaction between the leader and the vulnerable population (2 – 2 ½ pages)
A. Describe the identified vulnerable population. What are their major issues and barriers? (Use
current data to justify your description).
B. Give at least one example of how the leader and the followers interact.
C. Describe how the leader has impacted the vulnerable population.
D. What other opportunities can the leader provide/work to improve the conditions/resources of the
identified vulnerable population?
Note: This assignment will neither focus on politics nor engage in an analysis of the chosen leader’s
political views. This assignment should focus on the analysis of leadership styles and the impact on a
vulnerable population.
