In the realm of advanced nursing practice, the transition from clinician to educator is constant. The most effective framework for the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) to facilitate this transition is Andragogy (Adult Learning Theory), developed by Malcolm Knowles.

While many theories focus on how children learn (pedagogy), Andragogy addresses the unique psychological and social needs of adults—which constitutes the majority of an APN’s patient population.

The Core Theory: Andragogy

Andragogy is based on the premise that adult learners are distinct from children because they are self-directed and expect to take responsibility for their decisions. Knowles identified several key assumptions that define adult learners:

The Need to Know: Adults need to understand why they need to learn something before undertaking it.

Self-Concept: Adults have a deep need to be seen by others as being capable of self-direction.

Role of Experience: Adults have a vast reservoir of experience that serves as a rich resource for learning.

Readiness to Learn: Adults become ready to learn things that will help them cope effectively with real-life situations.
