Listening Outline

Listen to a music sample at the course website. Listen to it several times. Create a listening outline, similar to the outlines that appear in our textbook. The goal is to provide a listening guide that depicts what to listen for at specific locations in the musical example. Be as specific and descriptive as possible, only writing what you yourself detect when listening. Point out important musical elements, such as: • tempo and any tempo changes • dynamics and any dynamic changes • musical expression, mood, excitement, etc. • what instruments and/or vocals are heard • any prominent techniques of performance • Denote specific minute/second locations in your outline. Listen to the recording of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy." This is an orchestral composition by the composer Peter Tchaikovsky.
