Literary Analysis

Race and gender issues have informed our discussion of literary texts such as Maya Angelou’s “Momma, the Dentist, and Me,” George Saunders’ “My Amendment,” and Ernestine Johnson’s “The Average Black Girl.” The contextual texts of Michael Omi and Howard Winant’s “Racial Formations” and Judith Lorber’s “Night to His Day: The social construction of gender” also helped inform these raced and gendered readings by offering two lenses through which to interpret the texts. This assignment now asks that you critically analyse ONE of the aforementioned literary pieces through the lens of one of the contextual pieces in 750 - 1, 000 words (3-5 pages) by posing a clear interpretive question about the role of race or gender in the work. This question should be clearly stated and answered (claim), with the rest of the paper offering support with quotes from the literary text and at least one of the contextual pieces we read alongside them. In essence, write a critical literary analysis on race or gender, with special emphasis on the interpretation and criticism reading levels.
