Assignment:
The television show Supernanny (2005 - 2012) often did an excellent job of portraying the difficulties of parenting and family life, especially when it comes to adolescence. Below, I've attached an episode of Supernanny that involves many of the topics we talked about during Chapter 7 - adolescents' family interactions, sibling relationships, parenting adolescents, divorce/remarriage, etc. Please watch it, and ANSWER 3 of the following questions. Be sure to refer to specific concepts/theories/research (from the book or from class) that you see playing out in the episode.
1)According to the textbook/what we've discussed in class, what types of things do parents and teens usually disagree about? Name 2 specific things are the parents and teens disagreeing on in the video - do these disagreements match up with what our book says teens & parents disagree on?
2)What type of parenting style (pg. 199/198) are the parents showing before Supernanny intervenes? In your answer, be include 2 specific behaviors or events that provide evidence/show that the parents are using this style.
3)Are the behaviors of the teens typical of adolescents raised with the parenting style being used by the parents on this show (according to our textbook - pg. 198/199 or slide 7 of the PowerPoint)? In your answer, discuss what IS typical behavior from children raised by this parenting style and 2 specific behaviors (from any of the children) that support your answer.
4)How has divorce/re-marriage effected this family? Discuss 2 ways in which divorce/re-marriage has effected the family, and discuss whether or not these effects are typical (based on what we said in class/what the textbook says about divorce/remarriage).
5)What kind of relationships do the teens have with their siblings? Classify the relationships of at least 2 sibling pairs based on the types of relationships our book discusses (bottom of pg 192), and give at least 1 example of a behaviors that supports your classification of each pair..
6))Do you notice any bidirectional effects happening here? Describe 1 example of a bidirectional effect from the show (please be sure to describe BOTH directions of the bidirectional effect: (1) how the adolescent affects the other person & (2) how the adolescent is affected by the other person).
