It is important for you to learn more about mental health promotion and how to assess the effectiveness of these efforts. One of the ways professionals evaluate what is effective in mental health promotion is by investigating evidence-based practice (EBP), which is supported by sound research. EBP can be viewed through various lenses, including process and procedures, approaches, strategies, and interventions. Go back and review EBP in Ch 3 because there are several key points that you need to have in mind as you work on this assignment. It is important to know how to access information about EBP, and Table 3.3 in your text provides a list of selected resources. I also encourage you to look at the resources available through the TWU Libraries website. In addition, take the time to connect with a TWU reference librarian. These librarians have a wealth of knowledge and possess competencies for conducting database searches to uncover valuable information.
For Learning Activity 2, you will be doing a little sleuth work in the spirit of asking questions, looking at connections, and using information in new ways. For this assignment, you are to find evidenced-based research on the effectiveness of an actual community mental health program/campaign. In other words, you need to find a community mental health program or campaign that has recent evidence of effectiveness as demonstrated through research (within the past five or six years).
This assignment will go much more smoothly if you meet with a TWU reference librarian so she/he can help you search the databases and identify an evidence-based mental health program or campaign.

There is also a tab for Library Tutorials to help you acquire some basic knowledge and skills. I also recommend that you peruse the Health Studies LibGuide at http://libguides.twu.edu/healthstudies (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. If you have questions, Elaine Cox is an incredible Health Sciences librarian who is extremely helpful. (Her contact information is on the Health Studies LibGuide page.)
After you have identified the program/campaign, the next step is to investigate it. After you have identified and investigated an evidence-based mental health program or campaign, including the research supporting its effectiveness, you are ready to compose your paper.
The formally written paper should include all of the following elements:
- Describe the mental health program or campaign you investigated. Include the following: (a) the stakeholder group served by the program/campaign, (b) the program/campaign goals, and (c) what process or approach is used to attain the goals.
- Identify the EBP that is used/applied by the program/campaign (with correct citation). Next, explain how the EBP is implemented within the program/campaign.
- How are the cultural, societal, and health literacy needs of the stakeholder group addressed by the program/campaign?
- Provide an overview of the research findings that support the effectiveness of the program/campaign (with correct citations). What were the aims of the research study? How did the research confirm the effectiveness of the program/campaign? (Note: If you found more than one research study, be sure to discuss all of the studies and support your discussion with correct APA citations. Discuss each research study in a separate paragraph to provide logic and flow to the paper.
- Using Chapter 8 in your textbook as a guide (and citing accordingly), identify the type of evaluation research design the researchers used to evaluate the program.
- Discuss what you learned from reading the research and investigating the program/campaign. In particular, did the research change the way you looked at the program? How did the research help you better understand the program/campaign? What did you learn about the application of EBP so that theory can be translated into real-world health promotion practice?
- Analyze what you have learned from this assignment. After reading Chapters 6-8 in the textbook and examining an actual evidence-based mental health program/campaign, respond to the following: (a) How has your perspective changed in terms of evaluating the effectiveness of mental health program/campaign? (b) When determining the quality of a particular mental health promotion program or intervention, what specific aspects will you look for? What questions will you ask?
