Misconception, hearing and listening

You have covered the model of self-concept and self awareness (The Johari Window) from Chapter Two in your movie assignment. Test three asks that you address mis-perception. There are specific theories which explain how our perceptions may not be accurate. See Impression Formation Processes in chapter two (pages 40 — 43). Please pick two theories and explain them in our own words with specific examples for test three. Chapter Three As with perception, the listening process can be studied as something that takes places in stages. The first stage hearing is something you want to protect. Exposure to loud sounds for extended periods of time can cause hearing loss. It's crazy when you are standing next to someone with an iPod and you can hear the music. I've left concerts because the music was too loud. Have you ever attended a music concert and your ears were ringing? That's the hairs in you inner ear vibrating from high decibels. Not good! If the hairs break off - that causes hearing loss. See Sensory Hearing Loss: http://kidshealth.org/kid/health_problems/sightthearing_impairment.html (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. Aren't cats interesting? I love how they can move their outer ears independently. They are trying to pick up the sound waves—that first step. Activate W. The next stage involves making sense out of what you've heard. And the final stages include memory and evaluation. All of this is a very active process vs. "hearing- which is a passive process. Have you ever studied another language? Usually you're really tired after a foreign language class ... or a trip to another country. The listening process slows down as you try to have that second step of "understanding" take place. I remember when I lived in Japan. I would sometimes cry if the phone rang! I knew it was going to be a struggle to figure out what the caller was saying. What do you think some barriers to listening are? Obviously if we are tired, sleepy, hungry, etc. - it's difficult to listen. One barrier you might not think about is the gap between speaking and listening. We speak about 170 — 180 words per minute. When we are really focused, our brains can handle around 300 words per minute. What happens is — we sometimes start to drift off once we think we "have a gist" of what the other person is saying.
