Moral Ethics

Explain what you consider to be the important philosophical differences taken in the "final speeches" of 'Awkins and Belcher in O'Connor's story, "Guests of the Nation." That is, what appeals do they make to philosophical concepts we've visited with in the effort to save their lives? Is Belcher trying to save his life, or do something else? What is the "logic" of their varying responses to being faced with death at the hands of their "friends" and "political enemies"? Finally, what do you think O'Connor is trying to portray about the ethics of war in presenting us with this scene, and this story?
