Therefore, what people mean is more complicated than that. What companies really want is employee commitment to the organization, employee satisfaction with his/her career path, and high productivity and low attrition. Companies need to know to focus their efforts on things that will motivate employees toward those goals. How much is motivation intrinsic or extrinsic? To what level is motivation situational? Meaning that one can be motivated in some instances and not in others? What drives people?
