Movie analysis

Apply a developmental theory to a movie of your choice.

  1. An overview of the story depicted in the movie (10 points) 2. An overview of theory being used and its' approach to human behavior (10 points) 3. An application of the theory being used to the subject matter at hand (20 points) 4. An evaluation of the approach and its usefulness (10 points)
Some good movies might include those like: Boyhood (adolescent issues), Calendar Girls or Grumpy Old Men (issues with aging), American Beauty (mid-life crisis/middle adulthood issues), Young Adult or Wild (identity achievement), The Descendants or Life as A House or even The Fault in Our Stars (death and dying), La La Land (identity achievement vs intimacy) and so many more…
Please be careful to pick a theory and a movie that match: not all theories will be as useful as others for interpreting the story told in a particular movie. Also, this assignment is a way for you to prove your understanding and application of theoretical perspectives of the course, not the movie. Thus, your essay should focus on using the theory to understand and interpret the behaviors observed in the movie, not just a review of the story.
Some theories to consider…Erikson, Maslow, Piaget, Marcia, Levinson, Kubler Ross, Baumrind, and more!
