Movie or an episode of a TV show that includes at least two biology-related science topics as a significant portion of its plot.
Basic Assignment: Find a movie or an episode of a TV show that includes at least two biology-related science topics as a significant portion of its plot. Describe the movie/TV show, what is the biology-related science and both topics are integrated into the plot. Finally, briefly describe the related biology information presented in the lectures, and using this information critique the biology-related science in the movie/TV show for its believability/realism.
NOTE –
1. RESTRICTIONS:
1. MUST be a movie/episode from a year that ends in 7 (2017, 2007, 1997, etc) or 3 (2013, 2003, 1993, etc).
2. Documentaries and science education shows (adult and children’s) are ineligible. Using such a show will result in a mark of 0
3. You are encouraged to be original and avoid forensics-based shows like CSI and NCIS and their spin-offs.
1. Biology-related science addressed in the movie / TV show can relate to something covered in any portion of the course though you may not want to choose something in the last couple of lectures since they will be taught close to the assignment deadline.

A Discussion called ‘Assignment 3 – Movie_TV Show Signup’ has been created. Students must:
1. Use the Search tool to make sure that their movie/TV show episode has not already been listed (watch out for ‘A/n’ and ‘The’).
2. Post the full name, year and production company/network of their movie or TV show episode to this Discussion to ‘reserve’ their movie or TV show episode (for a TV show episode need to make sure that it is clear which episode is used). Use the full name of the movie/show as the Subject of your post. Only ONE movie or TV show may be reserved – if you need to change, contact the TAs so that your previous choice can be removed from the list.
3. Include the time & date ‘stamp’ from your post to the Discussion in your report.
Details:
The purpose of this assignment is to consider the use of biology in creative popular culture and how accurate the portrayal of the biology may be (i.e. is it realistic, or is it just a ‘good story’?). Your report should be no more than 1000 words long and should be written as if you were a columnist for a popular science magazine considering the inclusion of science in popular culture.
The report must be submitted as a single-spaced Word or PDF document, and include the following:
1. At the top of the first page:
1. Full name, year and production company/network of the movie or TV show episode (for a TV show episode need to specify name of show and episode).
2. A link to an online information source for this movie/TV show episode for reference purposes – e.g. IMDb or, for a recent movie, the official page from the production company.
3. Time & date from sign-up.
4. Note of the related topics discussed in class, including Lecture numbers (from syllabus).
1. The text of the report (no more than 1000 words) should be structured as follows.
Summary Paragraph
Plot & Integration of Biology into the Movie/TV Show: A short summary of the overall plot of the movie or TV show episode, including how the biology-related science is integrated into the plot of the movie/TV show episode (i.e. a statement on how it is integral to the movie/TV show).
Following the plot summary, you should choose at least two examples of biology-related science from the movie, each separated by sub-headings summarizing the biology you will discuss.
These can address specific examples or the general premise of the film (or both). For each of the examples, you should have a paragraph addressing:
1. Biology-Related Science in the Movie/TV Show: A clear description of the biology-related science that takes place in the movie/TV show (details go here rather than in plot summary).
2. Summary of Related Biological Phenomena from Class: A concise summary of the biological phenomena discussed in class to which the biology-related science in the movie relates.
3. Critique of Biology in the Movie/TV Show:A reasoned critique of the biology-related science in the movie/TV show episode. Is the science realistically portrayed? Is it possible now? May it be possible in the future? If you are dealing with something historical, would it have been possible then (i.e.an anachronism)? Are there any glaring errors in the science portrayed? Address each of these questions in your discussion as well as your reasoning for your responses to each question.
1. Bibliography: If you referenced a scientific article or other source of information for your discussion, please reference it in the text and include a Bibliography section with full reference information using APA Style.
2. Word count for the main text of your report (the sections listed in [2]) – not to exceed 1000 words.
3. The paper must have page numbers & your last name and ID number must be indicated in the top right hand corner of each page.
4. It is expected that your report will be written in your own words and you will reference ideas coming from other sources than your thinking (see Academic Integrity Statement below).
Make sure that your URLs work and that they come from sources that do not need special sign-ins
lease remember to proofread/spell-check! Better yet (or as well) – have a friend or two read it before submission to make sure it makes sense.
Evaluation Criteria:
1. Summary of the overall plot is clear and concise.
2. Inclusion of statements of how both biology topics are integral to the plot.
3. Description of biology in the movie/TV show is clear, concise and adequately describes the biology present.
4. Summary of the related class topics is clear, concise and accurate.
5. Critique of the biology in the movie/TV show is logical, convincing, and addresses all the applicable questions asked in the instructions.
6. Completeness – contains all required components listed under ‘Details’.
7. Originality and relevance of movie/TV show to class topics.
8. Freedom from error – movie contains significant amount of biology, movie is from an appropriate year and not used by someone else, class topic is appropriate, URL works, word count is respected, and report is free from spelling and grammatical errors.
