Movie Review Blog
Here is some guidance for how to write your review:
-Your work should be posted online under the “Movie Reviews” section of the Discussions page on Canvas.
-Choose any movie related to South Asia in any way. Only, make sure it’s a feature-length movie, not a tv show, and that it is related to South Asia (not South EAST Asia, not the Middle East, etc.)
-Also, no movies that had been assigned as required viewing for class. Movies listed as optional in the syllabus are acceptable.
-Your movie review should be approximately 2-3 pages (500-750 words) in length.
-At the top of your blog post, you should mention the title of the movie, the year produced, and the names of relevant actors, directors, etc. This info does not count towards your word limit unless incorporated into the text as part of the discussion.
-In the review, do NOT just summarize the plot. Spend no more than about 1 short paragraph doing plot summary!
-Your review should provide interpretation, analysis, insight, and critique.
-Discussion of historical, cultural, political, economic, and gender issues particularly welcome. (I am more interested in discussions of this sort than a discussion of the quality of directing, acting, etc.)
-But be careful not to overgeneralize about all of South Asia or South Asians based on this single film, its characters & plot.
-To get an idea of how to write a good movie review, try reading some professional reviews from reputable sources. Also, feel free to read reviews of the movie you are watching, but make sure to properly cite any and all outside readings you draw any ideas from.
-Finally, your post should include a visual aid such as a movie poster, screengrab, or a link to a video such as a movie trailer or other clip.
