Musical creativity, replication, and imitation

Think about how much creativity, particularly musical creativity, is reorganizing things that already existed, and how much of it is actually creating something new.

Is what we call musical creativity really the product of imperfectly trying to replicate something? Can you think of other musical examples that you listen to right now as part of your normal musical habits where you can point out a specific, imperfect, imitation?

Also, feel free to share your own definition of musical creativity.

Hint for the question - Let's compare Anthony Newley's piece with Life on Mars (1973 version).
