For this assignment, review a theatrical motion picture film that is centered on a myth. Although this assignment excludes television programs and made-for-television films, there are many feature-length films that you could potentially examine. I have compiled a sample list of potential films (below) from which you might consider choosing. The list is by no means comprehensive. You are welcome to select another mythology-based film to write on, but it might be a good idea to check with me beforehand to verify that it is appropriate for the purposes of this assignment.
Specific Instructions
1) Choose a film, watch it in its entirety, and take notes.
2) Briefly summarize the film’s plot and its principal characters.
3) Discuss the film’s theme or themes, if applicable.
4) Place the film’s events in the context of the mythology from which it borrows, and point out where it deviates from conventional versions of that mythology. For instance, if you were analyzing Wonder Woman (with Gal Gadot), you would explain what takes place in the film while making comparisons and linkages with the standard mythology surrounding the Amazons and their queen, Hippolyta.
5) Analyze the film’s worth (its strengths and weaknesses, its dramatic impact, its entertainment value, the degree to which it is faithful to the original myth, its ability to realistically conjure up the initial appeal of the myth).
