In this writing assignment, you will select an historical or current issue in Native American history and write an op-ed that does the following:
Informs a broad audience about the issue in question and its stakes (why it is important)
Educates the audience using necessary historical context required to understand the issue; and,
Provides your unique opinion on the issue.
Since op-eds are published in newspapers, the audience for your piece is a broad, educated base who are interested in world issues. If it helps, you can imagine your piece being published in a specific publication such as the New York Times, NPR, the Michigan Daily, Vice, Medium, etc. You can (optionally) indicate the publication in your final submission.
You may write about current issues in Native America, but you are not limited to the present moment in time. If you choose to write as a columnist from a different historical period (e.g. the assimilation/allotment era or during the height of the American Indian Movement in the 1970s) be sure to date your piece during that time.
