Negative Externaility

Order Description You have read about the different types of market failures and how each leads to an inefficient allocation of goods and services. Externalities lead to sub-optimal outcomes for society. One of the most dramatic market failures relates to the negative externality imposed on the public by certain types of manufacturing. Pollution results in negative externalities -- or costs -- on the public in states across the country. To investigate how pollution varies within each state, go to the American Lung Association data website: https://www.lung.org/our-initiatives/healthy-air/sota/. Step 1. Choose a state other than New York then hit "search". Step 2. Does this state have healthy air? What percentage of the counties in the state score an A? What percentage of counties in the state score a D or F? Step 3. Using this analysis, create a pie graph in MS Excel that shows the percentage of counties in the state with healthy or unhealthy air quality. Step 4. Post: Share your results below by uploading your graph and your interpretation of the findings from the analysis you did for step 2.
