• Provide care for 1-2 critically ill patients on a unit that accepts level I adult traumas, level II pediatric traumas, and is accredited as a comprehensive stroke center.
• Provide specific neurological and trauma cares in stabilizing critical ill patients by performing advance cardiovascular life support, mass transfusion & fluid resuscitation, advance airway management, and titrating intravenous critical drips by interpreting non-invasive and invasive hemodynamic monitor values.
• Use clinical judgement and decision- making skills to care for critically ill patients with multisystem traumatic injuries requiring craniotomy/craniectomy/spinal fusions, oral/maxillofacial, orthopedic, thoracic, abdominal, vascular, and plastic surgeries.
• Assist providers with life-saving procedures such as emergent rapid sequence induction and intubation, insertion of intravascular cooling catheters, central lines and thoracotomy tubes, bedside external ventricular drain placement and intracranial pressure monitor system, and follow strict protocol to prevent possible complications.
• Provide comprehensive and focused care for patients with cerebrovascular accident using NIH stroke scale to improve acute stroke symptoms, closely monitor and manage blood pressure parameters, heparin & tPA administration/titration for ischemic strokes, and adequately assess pain, sedation level, and fluid needs by interpreting ICP's, EVD's, CVP's, and vital signs.
• Develop personalized neurological and trauma patient care plans and implement specific nursing actions to improve the overall health of patients.
• Participate daily in multidisciplinary trauma patient rounds by presenting all pertinent data to the trauma team consisting of trauma surgeons, advance practice providers, nurse managers, pharmacists, dietitians, respiratory therapists, and social services to improve patient care and outcomes.
• Use nursing judgment and appropriate ethical frameworks to collaborate with life source specialist to provide care to patients undergoing tissue and organ donation.
• Provider appropriate patient-centered teaching that reflects health literacy to foster patient engagement and family involvement.
