Treatment choices for your patients are complex decisions. Patient compliance is often a major factoring in
determining a therapeutic regimen. Compliance is complicated for a variety of reasons. Patients face a number
of barriers including price, availability, insurance mandates, and sometimes, ignorance. The effect of
standardized treatments can reduce morbidity and mortality in many cases. However, patient non-compliance
can result in added hospitalizations and complications, especially with many otherwise manageable chronic
conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Compliance can be the most challenging barrier to
treatment for the clinician. In our aging population, clinicians in all specialties will be caring for patients with
many barriers and issues associated with compliance. In this section, we will focus on your clinical experiences
that demonstrate your understanding of compliance issues and your approach to the non-compliant patient.
