Using concepts from rhetoric and skills of fact-checking, specifically “going upstream” and “reading laterally” as outlined in Caulfield’s Web Literacy for Student Fact-Checkers, you will analyse 2 different opinion/analysis articles based around 1 recent, specific exigence of your choosing. You will first “go upstream” in each article to see where their facts come from and how they are employed rhetorically. Then you will “read laterally,” comparing how each writer uses facts and rhetorical strategies to make their arguments. Finally, you will write up your analysis and conclusions for a general academic audience (e.g. a “gen-ed course” level of knowledge).
