Organisations and People Management-Unit 4 Journal Task 3 (Organisational culture)

Client:
Journal Task 3 :Your experiences of organisational culture

In this discussion forum, you will reflect on your own experiences of organisational culture.

Introduction

Before beginning this discussion, make sure you have completed the previous Journal Task.

Your task

We are now going to repeat the steps which you carried out for your own organisational example, using two cases that we have encountered before: Netflix and Amazon.
Before you begin, look again at these two articles:
• Inside Amazon: Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace | NY Times
• McCord, P. (2014). How Netflix reinvented HR. Harvard Business Review, 92(1), 70‒76. *This article can be found in your electronic resource list.
Next, repeat steps 1 to 4 from the previous Journal Task for these two companies and discuss your results with the rest of the group. If you have time, choose other case study organisations that we have looked at throughout the module.
To remind you, the questions were:

  1. In your own words, how would you describe the culture of the organisation to an outsider?
  2. Can you apply Deal and Kennedy, or any of the other cultural typologies, to describe this organisation?
  3. What impact does the culture have on the organisation? You could think about the following:
3a. What behaviours does it encourage and discourage?
3b. Does the culture help or hinder the organisation?
3c. Is there anything that you would recommend to change the culture?
  4. Finally, try out the cultural assessment tool of the organisation. What do you think of the result? Has it really captured the nature of that organisation? What does it tell you about the organisation? What does it not reveal of the organisation’s culture?

  5. As a final discussion point, we saw in Unit 3 that post-industrial organisations relinquish a lot of the control provided by rationalisation. To what extent do you think that culture brings back some management control to these organisations?
