ECE 1301 Pedagogical Narration
Date: Oct 17th, 2018
Child: Nancy, age 4
Setting: Nancy colored a piece of printable pumpkin at Daycare.
Ordinary moment:
Nancy seems excited when she goes to Daycare. She sits next to her friend, Sandra. Nancy turns her body to Sandra and says, “Sandra, I went to the pumpkin patch last week with my family. This is the first time I go there. It is so cool!” Sandra keeps coloring the pumpkin and looks at Nancy and silent. Sandra uses her little right hand to grab a piece of printable pumpkin. She picks up an orange color marker and starts to fill it into the pumpkin. she murmurs and says, “Some pumpkin is with orange color. some pumpkin is with green color. I love to decorate a pumpkin with my family. It is so interesting.” Nancy put a piece of printable pumpkin into a bin until she finished. She walks toward the teacher and said, “Kelly! I went to the pumpkin patch last week. Lots, lots, lots of pumpkins.” Teacher Kelly bends down her body and responses to Nancy, “Wow, that is so great. Did you have fun at the pumpkin patch and get a big pumpkin?” Nancy says, “Yep! I run and run and run, I find a big, big orange one. My papa uses a sharp knife to cut a big one. And he carries it home. And…And I have a small one. My mama gave it to me yesterday. I bring the small pumpkin to home.” Nancy asks the teacher, “Teacher, do you have books about pumpkins? I want to know more about pumpkins. I love pumpkins!” The teacher smiles at Nancy and says, “Absolutely yes, I am going to read books about pumpkins when we do circle time. Nancy smiles back to her teacher and walks to the snack table to have snacks.
Making Learning Visible
Nancy seems to be exploring art skills after she visited a field of the pumpkin patch. She recollects what she sees colors of pumpkins. Nancy seems to be exploring social development as she shares her happy moment with her family to Sandra. Nancy demonstrates language skills when she explains what tools her father uses to cut a pumpkin stem. Nancy seems to be exploring early math concepts as she mentions the sizes of “big” “small” “lots of” pumpkins during her visits a field of the pumpkin patch. Nancy demonstrates physical development by using her gross and fine motor skills when she is running, bringing, picking, coloring, and etc.
Connecting the BC Early Learning Framework
Well-Being and Belonging:
Feel safe and respected: Nancy feels safe and respected when he explores the materials around his trip with his family as he is able to freely bring her questions and experiences to her teacher and her friend.
Express a sense of personal well-being: Nancy seems comfortable exploring the surrounding nature after she has a conversation with her teacher
Build healthy relationships with both adults and children: Nancy builds a positive relationship with her teacher and she shares her experience about her family field trip.
Feel a sense of security, self-respect, and self-regulation: The teacher’s behavior demonstrates that she respects Nancy’s questions and the conversation between her and Justin.
Exploration and Creativity:
Explore the world using their bodies and all their senses: Nancy explores the nature about a field of the pumpkin patch with her parents and she seems curious about it.
Actively explore, think, and reason: Nancy explores colors of pumpkins and sizes of pumpkins. She also wants to learn more about pumpkins.
Express a zest for living and learning: Nancy is curious and active in her exploration. She smiles and engages others in her play.
Languages and literacies:
Use numbers, measurement, and form in meaningful contexts: Nancy uses sizes to describe pumpkins her family has. Sometimes parents are busy to work, and children need to go to daycare, so there is not lots of time to stay together. So, it is meaningful to Nancy because harvest pumpkins are a good family gathering time.
Develop diverse language abilities and the capacity to communicate with others in many ways: Nancy asks a question, voices her thoughts, calls another child’s name, and share her experience in the Daycare.
Social Responsibility and Diversity:
Explore and learn about family, community and the wider world: Nancy uses an experiment to share with her friend and her teacher. She learns new knowledge when her teacher reads books about pumpkins in the circle time and she also learn new knowledge about pumpkins from her nature family field trip.
Extending and Deepening the Learning
As Nancy’s teacher, I plan to provide additional activities to let Nancy observe more about pumpkins to maintain this topic. For example, I will put magnifier and pumpkins seed on the table and let Nancy observe about pumpkins seeds, such as size, shapes, texture, smell, and etc. If there is a chance, I will ask other teachers whether or not we can have a field trip of pumpkins patch to plant pumpkins one day (During May), let children engage in how to plant it. Then the daycare can have another field trip that let children discover how to harvest pumpkins.
I will ask inquiry-based questions to encourage Nancy to explore additional concepts around pumpkins:
“I wonder what’s pumpkin seed taste? Is it sweet or bitter?”
“I wonder what food we can make from a pumpkin?”
“I wonder what kind of facial feature we can make on a pumpkin!?”
