Personal Narrative

Description

For this project, you’ll write a story about an experience of learning (either in or out of school). In telling this story, you’ll have the opportunity to reflect on what that experience has taught you about what it means to learn, what kind of learner you are now, and, more generally, how the experience has influenced your identity and life philosophy.
Often—and alas!—we learn best from mistakes we have made that have had difficult consequences. A basic premise of this course is that the experience of difficulty can have positive outcomes. The trick is to view the experience of difficulty as an opportunity to slow down and reflect—and to grow as a thinker, a writer, and a person. In keeping with this idea, the learning situation you choose for your narrative may represent an experience that, viewed from one angle, could been seen as a setback— and, viewed from another angle, would be recognized as a sort of triumph.
