Today, smartphone applications allow us to check email, review stocks, find friends, locate restaurants, order pizza, monitor our personal health, watch our favorite shows, check sports scores, listen to music, showcase our creative skills, find heavenly bodies, record video, and edit pictures, etc. In using them, we must also consider how smartphone applications embody effective persuasive capabilities that are oftentimes at play and unbeknownst to us. App developers intentionally employ sophisticated psychological techniques which function to demand user time, money, attention, and they are known to influence the behavior and beliefs of billions of people across the world. Through taking these factors into account, a study of smartphone applications and their persuasive abilities is warranted.
