Choose one of the Philosophy texts by Philip Hallie (From Cruelty to Goodness/Good & Evil) Write an essay 3 pages that performs the following:
- 1st PART: Begin with a brief abstract (summary) of the philosopher's ideas as expressed in their essay, in the order in which they appear. Write approximately one sentence for each paragraph of writing by the author. You SHOULD NOT quote anything in this first section; all your sentences should be paraphrases of the text you choose to analyze. Your abstract should be one long paragraph (about their work, their philosophy (no quotes, no opinions). This abstract must contain all main ideas.
- Comment on the text - what, in your own words,is the philosopher doing, in terms of ethics? What problems might their writing solve? Upon what kinds of societal issues or controversies might their writing shed light? Why do you think the author wrote their text? (Speculate).
- (BODY) Choose one brief passage from the text that you think is central to its meaning (between one and fifty words in length) - quote the passage, word-for-word, and then explain why you chose it over all the other possible parts of the text you could highlight. How does the quotation express an idea or insight that's central to the author's writing? What makes your quoted passage stand out? Analyze the quote in detail and provide an explication of it (Explain in your own words what you yourself see in the passage that is special, unique, well-expressed, or impressive in some other way). Keep it to the main ideas no details. Talk about the quote itself.
- Think of an example scenario based on your own experience, or something you have seen or read about in a newspaper or online post, or in a documentary film, on television, or in a game, or someplace else. How might the text you've chosen aid us in understanding the scenario? How might its concepts and ideas provide keys for understanding the situation? How might the scenario illustrate the ideas and/or concepts found in your chosen text?
