When formulating your PICO question and completing your Week 1 Assignment you are asked to
select a Nurse Sensitive Indicator which best fits the PICO question. Nurse Sensitive Indicators can be located
by using the NDNQI link located in Week 1 Resources and by reviewing pages 303-304 of the Grove, Burns,
and Gray (2013) text. It is important the PICO fits into one of the 13 categories. This may take some creativity,
but all PICO questions will fit into one of the Nurse Sensitive Indicators. When formulating your PICO question
review the assigned readings in the Brown text. The PICO issue is to be under nursing control and clinically
focused. This will assist in locating research for the topic as we progress in the course.
A note about PICO topics: Please keep in mind the PICO developed this week will be used for the entire
course and the Week 5 paper will be built upon this topic. Using topics such as staffing ratios and health
insurance or other global issues are not suitable for the project as these topics are too broad and the paper too
small. Use those topics for your doctoral studies.
Think about practice changes which can improve quality and safety of care that can be implemented without
involving the entire hospital budget committee, state, or federal regulations. It is difficult to implement or
propose to implement a change on such a huge scale. As you develop and refine your PICO keep in mind
there must be measurable outcomes to determine if the proposed change is effective.
