Choose a poem from your textbook and write a 4-5 page typed, double spaced explication of the poem.
When you explicate a poem, your job is to comment on, analyze, and explain each line of the poem. Your explication will discuss how the poet uses words, rhyme, rhythm, imagery, sounds, figurative language, tone, and other poetic devices to help produce the meaning (theme) and the effect of the poem. To explicate your poem, begin with the first line and move through the poem to the end, writing a prose explanation of every line to show how the poet communicates his or her message. Be sure to support your explanation of the poem with quotes. Keep in mind that an explication considers the significance of anything and everything in the poem. Do not just write about what the poem means to you. Show how you arrived at your ideas.
