Order Description
The annotated bibliography is a library research assignment. A bibliography is the first step you should complete when writin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing a major research paper as you must do for Assignment 4. The topic you select for the annotated bibliography should be the same as the one you will focus on for your major research paper in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in this course. Students should consult their tutor for advice on selectin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing their topics, but below are a few suggestions:
The American in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">inventor and statesman, Benjamin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in Franklin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in, is purported to have said, “People willin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.” Today, though, states claim that there is a need to surrender some of our freedom and privacy as part of the “war on terror” in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in the in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">interests of keepin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing us more secure. Usin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing specific examples from the United States, Canada, and the United Kin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ingdom, discuss the extent to which our freedom and privacy is bein" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing compromised. Can these in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">intrusions in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">into personal freedoms and privacy be justified in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in a liberal democracy? With reference to the ideas of liberal democracy, explain" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in your position.
How do coalition and min" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">inority governments differ? Why does the Canadian system reject the idea of coalition governments? Is a coalition government a better approach for Canada than a min" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">inority government? Justify your position.
What is a public service? Many citizens, economists, and right win" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing partisans assert that the private sector can deliver public services better if these services are privatized. Why is this assertion made? Critically assess this assertion by examin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">inin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing at least two cases of privatization of public services in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in Canada, the United States, or the United Kin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ingdom
How are judges shielded from political in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">interference? Why do liberal democracies do this and does judicial review necessitate that this traditional rule of no political in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">interference be relaxed?
Does the existence and operation of in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">international governance structures threaten the sovereignty of the nation-state?
Recently the Canadian Senate has been characterized by a series of scandals leadin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing some Canadians to question its need, role and function. Consider the proposals to reform the Senate from the 1980s to date. Are any sufficient to create a legitimate and accountable upper chamber within" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in the Canadian federal system? What does the Australian experience with an elected upper house suggest is possible?
The objectives of this course in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">include identifyin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing the essential features of liberal democracy within" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in a political economy context. That context is in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">informed by some degree of capitalism in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in all liberal democratic nations. Why is this? Do you thin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ink that liberal democratic theory and the theory of capitalism are compatible? Explain" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in why you hold the position that you do.
Please keep in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in min" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ind that these are suggested topics only. If none of these topics is of in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">interest to a student, or if you would like to modify one of the above topics, consult your tutor concernin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing the possibility of writin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing a research paper on a topic of in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">interest to you that is also related to a subject covered in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in this course. Do not proceed on an alternative topic, or with modifyin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing one of the above topics, without discussin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing it with your tutor beforehand.
Select no fewer than six and no more than eight academic refereed scholarly works that relate broadly to the topic of your major research paper. At least two (2) of the articles must have been published sin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ince 2009. A refereed or peer reviewed publication is one that has been blin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ind reviewed—that is, the reviewers do not know who wrote the proposed publication and its author does not know who has reviewed their work—by at least two qualified peer reviewers. These articles are longer on average than newspaper or magazin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ine articles, usually between 15 and 30 pages. Simply usin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing Google is not an acceptable method of research. Almost all library books and journal articles found in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in university databases have been peer reviewed. The Athabasca University library is a good place to start. If you have questions or doubts about this, or any other matter related to the course, contact your tutor. NOTE: your textbooks and assignment readin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ings do not count as sources that you can use. The textbooks may be useful for directin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing you to other more specific references (see their bibliographies at the end of a chapter), but they are of a general nature and do not constitute good references for a research essay.

Specific Instructions
Begin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in the assignment with a brief paragraph (three to five sentences) explain" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">inin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing your response to the question chosen, either one of the above questions or an alternate that you have discussed with your tutor. Whatever question you choose to examin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ine, clearly explain" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in your position on the question in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in the first paragraph of the assignment. This is essentially a statement of thesis upon which you will build your research essay (Assignment 4). Note that this thesis statement must be fairly specific. For in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">instance, if you selected question 4, it is not sufficient to say you are goin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing to examin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ine the matter of judicial in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">independence and judicial review in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in a liberal democracy (from the assigned question, we already know this). We ask why liberal democracies shield judges from political in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">interference and whether judicial review should entail a relaxation of this traditional rule of non-in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">interference. Accordin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ingly, we want to see a specific answer to these questions (in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">includin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing a position and why you hold that position), not simply a restatement of the question.
Afterwards, provide a summary, or précis, of each work selected. These summaries will be one paragraph of between three to six sentences (totalin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing 60 to 80 words). Summaries that exceed 80 words are not worthy of the name, so be very careful to use your words wisely. Each summary should describe succin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">inctly the work’s (1) thesis, that is, what the work argues or demonstrates, (2) evidence that develops or proves that thesis, and (3) relevance of the reference to the thesis of your own proposed research essay (identified in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in your in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">initial paragraph). In other words, how do you in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">intend to in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">incorporate the work in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">into your own essay to help you sustain" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in your thesis?
