Preparing a nutritional plan for an endurance or ultra-endurance athlete for competition
1. Select an endurance or ultra-endurance event lasting more than 2 hours. Write a report on
the physiological demands and nutritional needs of the event. This critical analysis paper
should contain a broad background of the sport with the associated changes that occur both
during training and the event.

2. Case Study – profile your athlete.
a. Include physical characteristics
b. History of training and event participation
c. Describe current training schedule
d. Nutritional information
e. Any other supporting information that might be useful (Approx. 500 words)
3. Assessment of Needs – With reference to both sections above make an assessment of needs
for your client to be able to achieve their goal. You can start this section with outlining the
goal. Provide detailed evidence from existing literature on any changes you may wish to
recommend. This section is where you will provide all the backing evidence for your
recommendations. (Approx. 1500 words)
4. Plan of Action – Build up on your evidence from section 3 you need to create a
recommendation plan. This plan needs to include –
a. Time frame to achieve goals
b. Schedule of plan to show the intended progress over your chosen time frame
c. Protocols for meals, fluid and ergogenic aid consumption during training and up to
the start of the event
d. Timing - including a generic guide to training sessions and associated meals on a day
to day basis (just a few examples will suffice)
e. Any specific needs that need to be considered during training
f. Plan for the day of the event including any advice for the night before
