Primary and secondary audiences.

The purpose of this assignment is to develop students’ understanding of the process of
developing appropriate public health communication messaging and materials. This
assignment consists of two parts: 1) brief assignment to answer the specific questions below;
and 2) either a health promotion brochure or fact sheet that you have developed based on the
best practices that have been discussed through lectures and in your readings.
Please place all of your references for your research for your communication materials at the
end of the assignment (part 1), followed by a screenshot of your readability statistics for your
text. Part 1 of the assignment should be 1-2 pages of text. Add your brochure or fact sheet
(part 2) at the end (after references).
A. Please select one of the six scenarios at end for the development of your health
brochure/fact sheet.
B. Part 1:
1) Describe your primary and secondary audiences.
2) Describe 2 audience segments within your primary audience that might respond
differently to your health message (e.g., males vs. females). Explain why you think
that they may respond differently;
3) Explain how you might target your public health message differently to the 2
segments;
4) Explain how you might design your public health message to be culturally
appropriate and why it is important to do so;
5) Describe two best practice health communication strategies that you are using in
developing your public health message.
C. Part 2:
1) Develop a health brochure or fact sheet targeted to your primary audience based on
the best practices of health communication that were discussed in class and in your
readings for your selected health issue. You must develop health materials on your
own. You cannot use existing materials.
2) Please be sure that your materials meet the following criteria:
a. Most important information is at the top
b. Used attractive and appropriate visuals
c. Language level used is no higher than 6th grade (must provide readability
statistics to document)

e. All text is grammatically correct and spelled correctly
