What is the origin of the word Penitentiary? What is its meaning to corrections? - There are nearly 400 law enforcement agency forensic laboratories in the United States. As a result of some high profile cases in which evidence has been mishandled, many of these labs have come under scrutiny. Those critical of locally-run labs claim that they should not be examining the evidence for cases originating and being prosecuted in their jurisdiction. Their belief is that the evidence examination function should be done at the State or Federal level. Proponents of local labs believe that their labs are certified and professionally run. Furthermore, the cost and time delays of having other labs examine their evidence would be too problematic.
