In this brief assignment, you will outline your research topic and central research questions, as well as discuss
where you will locate sources, and what types of evidence you might use. To begin, you might consider freewriting on the following questions:
What topic are your researching? Give a basic description or summary.
Why is this topic interesting to you?
What is your central research question? What additional questions do you have?
What types of evidence do you think you may need to locate?
This proposal is very brief, but your finished and submitted draft should maintain an academic tone, be
carefully proofread, and correctly formatted. Write the proposal so that it flows and provides a narrative. For an
example, see the Sample Topic Proposal in this folder.
Your proposal should be around 2 pages long, and must have four sections or paragraphs, which should cover
these four items:
Provide a summary or bit of background on what your research topic is.
Give some explanation of why the topic is of interest to you.
Detail your research questions, and discuss which is most important to you.
Explain what types of evidence you will be researching in order answer your research questions.
What types of academic sources or information might you need?
Will you need scientific studies, medical data, economic data, or sociological information? Something else?
What search terms or keywords will you use?
Bear in mind that you have a very specific audience for this assignment -- your instructor. In your proposal, you
are making a case for why the topic you have selected is an interesting topic, and suitable for academic
research. So be sure that you are thorough in your explanation and discussion, and that your research
questions are clear and well-crafted.
