Prototype Description Report Overview Mobile devices have revolutionized the way we interact with technology, providing us with access to computation and communication on the go. However, using mobile devices while in motion poses challenges, such as walking, biking, or driving. The human-centered design process is crucial in addressing these challenges by observing users, conceptualizing ideas, prototyping solutions, and evaluating feedback. This project aims to redesign a mobile device and application to enhance usability in mobile contexts. Part 1: Observation During the observation phase, interviews were conducted with individuals engaging in various activities such as walking, biking, and driving. Insights were gathered on their experiences and difficulties when using mobile devices in motion. Users highlighted issues with touch screen interfaces requiring hand-eye coordination and attention. The observations emphasized the need for hands-free and intuitive interactions while on the move. Part 2: Conceptualization Brainstorming sessions generated five unique design concepts to improve mobile device usability in motion. The selected idea focused on a voice-activated interface that allows users to interact with the device without requiring manual input. This choice was driven by the need for a hands-free solution that enhances user safety and convenience while on the go. Part 3: Prototyping The selected idea was prototyped using a simple paper sketch with marker drawings. The prototype showcased a voice-activated system for performing common tasks like sending messages or making calls. The design emphasized clear visual cues for voice commands and feedback to guide users through the interaction process. Photos of the prototype were taken to document the concept visually. Part 4: Evaluation User feedback was collected by having individuals interact with the prototype as if it were a real application. Users appreciated the hands-free functionality and found the voice commands intuitive. However, some users expressed confusion regarding specific commands and suggested incorporating visual prompts for better clarity. Insights from user interactions highlighted the importance of seamless and user-friendly design for mobile interactions in motion. Deliverables - Observation: Documentation of interviewees and key insights on mobile device usage in motion. - Conceptualization: Outline of all design ideas and rationale for selecting the voice-activated interface concept. - Prototyping: Description and visual documentation of the voice-activated prototype. - Evaluation: Summary of user feedback, significant insights, and recommendations for future revisions. In conclusion, the prototype design demonstrates the potential for enhancing mobile device usability in motion through innovative, hands-free interaction methods. By incorporating user feedback and iterative improvements, we can create mobile experiences that are both functional and user-centric in dynamic environments.
