As an outstanding psychology student, you have become to go-to person for your friends who have problems that they want to discuss. Your friend Paula has a 15-year-old son named Larry. Paula tells you that Larry is "obsessed' with social media. He has accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, and he even has his own YouTube channel.
Paula is concerned that Larry spends too much time on social media. She worries that his academics will suffer, that his overuse of social media will affect his friendships, and that social media might be giving him a distorted view of reality. Larry, however, believes otherwise.
"Ma, you have nothing to worry about," he tells Paula. "First of all, everybody in my class is on these sites. Well, except maybe for a few dweebs, but if I'm not on these sites, the guys will think I'm a complete loser. Besides, my YouTube channel is gonna make me rich and famous. There's a kid my age from Kansas City who has 15,000 subscribers. He gets 100,000 views for each of his videos. He's making big bucks right now. If I continue to make videos, that could be me!"
Paula says to you, "You know something? Maybe he's right. This stuff wasn't around in my day, so it's possible that I'm just out of the loop. But you study this stuff so I'm sure you're knowledgeable in this area. What do you think I should tell him about his being on social media?"
Using outside resources, explain to Paula how prevalent social media is among adolescents as well as some of the advantages and disadvantages of social media use for adolescents.
