(1) Discuss how politics, advertising, ethics and public speaking play roles in Julius Caesar and Candide.
(2) Why is moral reasoning a valuable aspect of critical thinking? Use two examples from our reading to
support your response.
(3) Explain how nature works as a symbol or convention in Candide. Connect this to ideas of quality, values
and life choices for the individual, and how those relate to society.
(4) Vengeance (revenge) is a recurring theme this semester. Pick three examples from those we have studied
(at least two from this week's readings) and explain how this vengeance comes to pass (causes) and what
results (effects).
(5) Is this truly “the best of all possible worlds”? If not, what can we do to change it? *Use "The Ones Who Walk
Away from Omelas" and Candide and any other sources from this week.
(6) Compare and contrast Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” to Voltaire’s Candide. Why is satire an effective tool?
