Race and Racism

Your response to the discussion question should be at least 250 words in order to showcase some in-depth
reflection. Your peer response should be at least 100 words and should directly acknowledge your peer’s
statement, not just a simple I agree or disagree. Explain your position. You may use evidence from the course
materials to support your answer. Be sure to check your spelling and punctuation. Remember to back up your
opinions with evidence rather than using vague and general statements.
This week is about an important yet difficult topic- race. It is completely normal and acceptable to feel confused
and unsure about discussing it with your peers. I want to remind everyone that this is a safe place where all
opinions may be heard. Language matters, so be clear and respectful in describing you positions. It is also ok
to struggle to find the right words and to acknowledge that as well. Some of you are more well-versed and
experienced in conversations about race than others, use that as a way of modeling a constructive and open
discussion. It is also ok to agree to disagree on things, as long as you do it within the parameters described
here.

    Why do you think it is difficult for many people to talk about race and racism? Give at least two examples from
    the class material (readings, lectures, videos) in your answer and explain how they illustrate the difficulties
    people might experience. What suggestions do you have that could make the conversation about race less
    difficult and confusing and more normalized? Feel free to rely on have personal experience with engaging
    people in such a conversation.

    What is at least one new thing that you have learned about this week's topic on race? In your answer be sure
    to provide a detailed explanation with support of course materials. How does this new knowledge affect your
    views or opinions and experiences with race or racism? Would this affect your behavior in the future in some
    way? How?
