Two weeks ago a large fire tore through a large mixed-use building in the downtown area and the response to
the incident including the strategy and tactics have come into question. As the building is prominent in the
the downtown area, the local politicians have been publicly commenting on the Fire Department’s performance.
Unfortunately, four firefighters were injured and needed to be transported to the hospital after a section of lightweight truss collapsed and trapped them for a period of time. They had to be freed by the Rapid
Intervention Team, which was not in place prior to the entry of the initial crews. The Fire Chief has asked you to produce a report that explains the fire department’s actions on the incident to present at the next City Council meeting.
Review the department’s Rapid Intervention Guidelines and the Fire Department Annual Report and draft at
least 4-page paper that includes the following:
Identify at least five strategies and/or tactics for extinguishing building fires in occupied, multi-use structures.
Describe at least five fire factors that may influence an Incident Commander’s (IC) decision to commit crews to
the interior of a structure without a Rapid Intervention Team in place.
Include at least one recommendation you think is necessary for implementing a primary factors size up the chart to
use during incidents, explaining why this will increase firefighter safety.
Make any further necessary changes to the policy that will make it more comprehensive or easier to implement.
