Submit a 600-word reading response. It should be comprised of two parts: Part 1: Please address and analyze the main arguments, topics, or themes explored in the Gillis and Chaplin readings for this week. Some questions you might consider: How does Gillis's focus on islands rather than continents alter our understanding of the Atlantic world before the nineteenth century? Chaplin tracks changes in European conceptions of the Atlantic. What are some of these changes? Why do they occur?
Part 2: Place this map in conversation with what we have read this week and learned so far in lecture. Some questions you might consider: Who made this map? For what purpose? What are the physical attributes of the map? What region(s) does it attempt to represent? What kinds of geographical, environmental, or social features does it include? How does this map reflect or challenge some of the claims made by Gillis and/or Chaplin? Additionally, how does it connect to the topics and ideas explored in lecture so far?
